Kanyon an urban oasis in Istanbul. Turkey’s most distinguished shopping mall. The amazing new shopping center Kanyon opened in Istanbul (Turkey) May 2006, offering 400,000 square-feet of retail space, 26 tower floors of offices, and 179 luxury residences.
Kanyon Istanbul is fusing a unique approach to shopping, entertainment and retail in an extraordinary architectural shell. Kanyon features 160 stores, 9 cinema screens, fitness center. Top local and global brands, cafes, and open air performances are set in an atmosphere alive. Kanyon houses trendsetting prestigious brands with the world-famous fashion retailer Harvey Nichols. Apple’s first store in Continental Europe is also located in the new shopping center Kanyon.
Opened in June 2006, Kanyon is a mixed-use project built in downtown Istanbul that brings together 179 residential apartments, a 26 story office block and 37,500 square meters of retail space.
With Kanyon, the aim has been to create a heart-of-the-city that connects the people working, living, and shopping in the region and beyond, which will function more as an organic part of the urban space rather than a standard mall, office, or residential project.
The designers for Kanyon are the Jerde Partnership (www.jerde.com ), who are the world’s leading ‘experiential’ architectural practice. Their focus on the creation of ‘place’ rather than just a ‘building’ is very unique. Their primary concern is on how people interact with space, how this energy animates the environment, and how places can have a more intimate meaning in people’s lives beyond the physical space itself. It is a unique blend of design, understanding and directing human behavior, architecture, and urban planning.
Kanyon residences offer a nest at the heart of the action, but balance it with our need for tranquility and connection to green and outdoor space. Unlike most other modern residences, Kanyon offers balconies, private terraces and gardens, windows that actually open to let in fresh air, and 3,500m2 of common garden space. Residents at Kanyon will not feel like they are living in a hotel room.
The residences are based on 21 different styles ranging from 80 m² to 380 m². With interiors that are designed by Sevil Peach and Brigitte Weber, Kanyon residencse are unique, elegant, versatile, and functional.
Kanyon offices offer professionals a synergy of work and play. With cafés, restaurants, bars within the complex, social life at Kanyon is as vibrant as work life. Also, the 4000 m2 fitness club gives a chance to unwind and integrate wellness into hectic work schedules.
Spread over 4 levels, in a primarily open air environment, the retail mix at Kanyon sets the stage for 4 totally distinct streets, each with its own energy and vibe. This innovative positioning allows visitors to really connect with brands, and makes finding your way around both intuitive and more exciting. Further, as most walking areas are covered and climate controlled, Kanyon blends open-air with comfort and allows visitors to experience the best of each season. More than this, Kanyon marries the convenience of the shopping center with the vibrant air of the street in an inspiring one-of-a-kind setting.
Kanyon Istanbul is home to 160 stores, complete with gourmet supermarket, street bazaar, cinemas, restaurants, health club, and outdoor performance areas. The world’s top fashion, luxury, electronic, and entertainment brands satisfies every retail desire. Dozens of new brands entering Turkey for the first time, ranging from Wagamama, Douglas, Apple Store, to Conbipel are all featured. The big news is that, the world’s leading fashion mecca, Harvey Nichols, is the anchor. Bringing with it the countless brands that have given Harvey Nics its sassy edge in the UK, there is no doubt that this will immediately become the fashion center of Istanbul.
Beyond this, the overall experience and selection at Kanyon will set the standard for shopping not only in Turkey, but for the entire South European region.

Istiklal Avenue or Istiklal Street (Turkishİstiklâl CaddesiFrenchGrande Rue de PéraEnglishIndependence Avenue) is one of the most famous avenues in IstanbulTurkey, visited by nearly 3 million people in a single day over the course of weekends. Located in the historic Beyoğlu (Pera) district, it is an elegant pedestrian street, 1.4 kilometers long, which houses boutiquesmusic storesbookstoresart galleriescinemas, theatreslibrariescaféspubsnight clubs with live music, historical patisserieschocolateries and restaurants.
The avenue, surrounded by late Ottoman era buildings (mostly from the 19th and early 20th centuries) that were designed with the Neo-ClassicalNeo-GothicRenaissance RevivalBeaux-ArtsArt Nouveau and First Turkish National Architecture styles; as well as a few Art Deco style buildings from the early years of the Turkish Republic, and a number of more recent examples of modern architecture; starts from the medievalGenoese neighbourhood around Galata Tower and ultimately leads up to Taksim Square.

A historic tram on İstiklal Avenue
Galatasaray Square is located at approximately the center of the avenue and is home to the oldest secondary school in Turkey: the Galatasaray High School (Galatasaray Lisesi), originally known as the Galata Sarayı Enderun-u Hümayunu (Galata Palace Imperial School).
In the historic Karaköy (Galata) district towards the southern end of the avenue, it is possible to see the world's second-oldest subway station, generally known and referred to as simply Tünel (The Tunnel) which entered service in 1875. Moreover, one of the finest educational institutions established in Turkey, the German High School of Istanbul (Deutsche Schule Istanbul in German, Özel Alman Lisesi in Turkish) is also located near Tünel.
The cosmopolitan avenue is surrounded by an array of historical and politically significant buildings, such as the Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage) where small, intimate restaurants and taverns are found; Balık Pazarı (The Fish Market); the Ağa Camii Mosque; the Roman Catholic churches of Santa Maria Draperis and S. Antonio di Padova; the Greek OrthodoxHaghia Triada; the Armenian Üç Horan (among many other churches); several synagoguesmosques; academic institutions established by various European nations such as Austria,FranceGermany and Italy in the 19th century; and consulates (former embassies before 1923) of several nations including FranceGreece, the NetherlandsRussiaSpainSweden, and the United Kingdom.

During the Ottoman period, the avenue was called Cadde-i Kebir (Grand Avenue) and was a popular spot for Ottoman intellectuals, also becoming a center for European foreigners and the local Italian and French Levantines who referred to it as Grande Rue de Péra. When 19th-century travelers referred to Constantinople (today, Istanbul) as the Paris of the East, they were mentioning the Grande Rue de Péra (İstiklal Caddesi) and its half-European, half-Asian culture. With the declaration of the Republic on October 29, 1923, the avenue's name was changed to İstiklal (Independence) for commemorating the triumph at the Turkish War of Independence.
In September 1955, during the anti-Greek Istanbul Riots, the Avenue was pillaged in one night, while it was covered with pieces of glass, clothes, smashed white goods, rolled down and burned automobiles and other goods, all belonging to the wrecked shops.[1]
The avenue briefly fell from grace in the 1970s and 1980s, with its old Istanbulite inhabitants moving elsewhere, and its side streets – then stereotyped with their bars and bordellos – being populated by migrants from the rural areas of Anatolia.
However, during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a massive restoration process took place, master-planned and executed by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Beyoğlu Municipality (including the restoration of the historic buildings, new pavements for full pedestrianization, and the reinstallation of the historic trams), bringing the avenue its old charm and popularity. İstiklal Avenue once again became the center of fine arts and leisure in Istanbul, with real estate prices skyrocketing as a result. Numerous new art galleries, bookstores, cafés, pubs, restaurants, shops and hotels were opened. The venues around the avenue became the host of many international art festivals, such as the annual Istanbul Film Festival. İstiklal Avenue is also a popular venue for all sorts of parades, marches, gatherings and protests in the city.

Galata Tower
Although it is not completely certain as to when the Galata Tower was built, it is claimed that the it was built during the reign of the Byzantian Emperor, Iustinianos in 507 CE.

It was called the Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) by the Genoese and the Megalos Pyrgos (The Great Tower) by the Byzantines. It took its present shape during the Genoese period. The Tower was heavily damaged during an earthquake in 1509, and it was renewed by the architect, Hayrettin, who was very famous during that period. During the reign of Süleiman the Magnificent (1520-66), it was used as a jail for prisoners who were sentenced to work at the Kasımpaşa Naval Dockyard. The head astrologer, Takıyeddin Efendi, established an observatory on the top of the tower at the end of the 16th century and functioned as an observatory for a particular period of time. Later, it was closed and again turned into a prison by Sultan Murat III (1546-1595).
In 1638, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi flew as an early aviator using artificial wings from this tower across the Bosphorus to the slopes of Üsküdar on the Anatolian side during the reign of Murad V. Towards the 17th century, it was used  by the Mehter Band, the janissary band of musicians. After 1717, it was used as a fire-observatory tower, butthe tower itself was unfortunately destroyed in a fire in 1794.
After it was repaired, a cumba, a little room made of wood, was added to the tower during the reign of Sultan Selim III (1761-1808). After another fire in 1831, Sultan Mahmut added two more floors to the Tower and covered the top of the tower with a famous cloth in the shape of a conical hat.  An inscription written by Pertev Paşa concerning the tower’s repair works was affixedduring that time. After a strong storm in 1875,  the framework of the roofwas damaged and was late repaired in 1960. Today, the Galata Tower operates solely as a touristic attraction by a private company. The elevator only goes to the 7th floor, and the last two floors of the tower must be climbed by stairs.
After passing though the restaurant on the top floor, there is a balcony that encircles the tower. The restaurant’s view showcases a scene of Istanbul and the Bosphorus.
Dimensions
The height of the tower is 66.90 meters (62.59 meters non-including the ornament on top), the outer diameter is 16.45 meters, the inner diameter is 8.95 meters, and the thickness of the wall is 3.75 meters.
